7 Bedding Items You NEED For Better Sleep

1. Body Pillow

Sleeping with a body pillow was a game changer for me when it came to chest/shoulder pain and just being more comfortable.

To the side sleepers:

Holding a body pillow as you sleep opens up your chest and supports your shoulders and neck. This makes it easier to breathe and you’ll feel less stiff when you wake up. Until you get a body pillow, you can substitute with a blanket or regular pillow.

2. The Right Sheets

CONSIDER THIS BEFORE BUYING SHEETS:

Thread count

  • The higher the thread count, the less air-flow. So if you’re a hot sleeper, you’ll want a lower thread count. Cold sleepers will love flannel sheets!

Material

  • You may be sensitive to different materials. For example, silk sheets are slippery and the texture can throw some people off. But others love the sleek look and feel.

3. The Right Pillow

Changing pillows made a huge difference in my sleep quality. Compared to the old, worn out pillows I was used to, my new pillows actually supported my head and neck so I simply felt more comfortable and didn’t wake up with a stiff neck and shoulders.

Memory foam pillows are stiffer, where polyester and feather-filled are softer.

4. Silk Pillow Cases

Benefits of a silk pillow case:

  • Stay cool

  • Less hair breakage and tangling

  • Hydrated skin (silk doesn’t absorb moisture as much as cotton)

You can even get a silk pillow case for your body pillow!

Silk bonnets

I had to throw this in there — silk bonnets are a great option if you don’t want a silk pillow case but want to take care of your hair.

If your bonnet slides off at night, you may want a silk pillow case as a back up.

5. The Right Comforter

Find a comforter you look forward to using at night that keeps you cool and comfortable.

COMFORTER RECOMMENDATIONS

For college/travel:

A light-weight comforter that’s not embroidered is ideal for college/travel:

  • Having a heavy comforter will be hard to pack up and wash, and may be hot if you don’t have air conditioning (like some college dorms)

  • If your comforter is embroidered, the thread may come loose while traveling

I used this comforter for two years while I was in college — it’s so cute, easy to wash, and light for traveling back and forth.

For Master/guest Room

This is my current comforter (and one of the best investments I’ve made!) — it’s the perfect weight and keeps you cool.

6. Memory Foam Pad

If I could choose any bedding item for you, it would be a memory foam pad. They’re so soft and form to your body.

I still use the memory foam pad I received over two years ago and it’s held its shape. When I sleep in a bed that doesn’t have a memory foam pad, I feel stiff in the morning and don’t fall asleep as easily.

*Memory foam pads are a great gift for those heading off to college!

7. Weighted Sleep Mask

Weighted sleep masks are great for blocking out light and keeping you cool while you sleep. There are other benefits for migraines, headaches, puffy eyes, and dark circles, too!

Final Thoughts

A good night’s sleep starts with the right foundation — and your bedding is just as important as your state of mind. By incorporating these 7 essentials, you can create a sleep environment that supports quality sleep and wake up feeling refreshed and pain-free. These small changes can create the sleep improvements you many not even know you needed. So upgrade your bedding, get cozy, and enjoy the deep, restful sleep you deserve!
